Chapter 10

Sky

The luxurious feeling of touching Isla vanishes when she says can read my mind. Has everything we went through and experienced been a lie? Because she may be connected to me, but I’m sure as shit not learning about her sensitive vulnerabilities or devious plans. Hell, as a vampire, I’m not sure she emits brain waves at all. Since this is the first I’m hearing of her ability, specifically, I need details STAT. I ask the obvious: “How long has this been going on?”

She nibbles nervously on her nail. “It comes and goes. A day maybe. It shouldn’t be happening. It could be the magic, somehow. I’m not sure. Only my true soulmate, I understand, has the ability to sync with me so intimately.”

When it comes to intimacy, I don’t want Isla to know I never had sex with a woman. I’m supposed to be this big bad wolf. Even within my pack it’s rumored I step outside of our territory to get my jollies. Newsflash. I never jollied because the bridge between my human and wolfman side comes out preceding the elusive act, as it happened with Beth. And, as I glance at my clawed hands, with Isla. This isn’t a National Geographic wolf documentary on mating and imprinting. I can’t risk losing control and biting Isla. “A werewolf bite is deadly to a vampire.”

“Not necessarily. You’d never hurt me, Sky. But I’d like to talk about that and your anger with the network...” She runs her petite hand up the length of my arm.

I feel anything but soothed. This is a one-way deal, apparently, as I’m not hearing her thoughts. But then I check her out. She has the sweetest face I ever saw. I can tell by how she wraps herself with her arm, she’s self-conscious of her admission. And here I am, once again, on the verge of hurting Isla for wanting her to erase her newfound ability. Not just any ability, one that links our minds, and she’s picked up on me and my plot against the network. “I don’t want to talk about the network or my plans to ruin them.”

I punch up from lying with her, suddenly thirsty for more than water. I open the freezer, plop a few ice cubes into two glasses, and open a cola, splitting the bottle between the glasses. I realize I don’t know if she even drinks more than water or champagne, which I saw her drink prior.

She sits upright, leaning back against the headboard. “Uhm, I think you should have told me about this issue you’re having with the network. It’s serious and misleads the contestants.”

I hand her a glass. “I’m misleading the contestants? Did you really watch Beth’s season and my proposal to her?”

She pulls back and hisses, the ice cubes nearly spill. “Yes. I no more liked it than you did. It was cruel and totally avoidable.”

The cola is bubbly, and the caffeine hits my bloodstream in a flat second. Not sure that I need to be any more jacked up.
